Join the Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas County this Holiday Season as we support families in our community!

Our Adopt-a-Child/Family initiative supports families for the holidays, including gifts for their children, holiday food, gift cards and more. In 2021, we were able to help over 169 families with 375 children in Pinellas County through the support of community partners and individuals who have a passion for giving babies and their families a healthy start!

Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas, Inc.’s (HSCP) role as a United Way Suncoast (UWS) strategic community partner moves into a new era this month with the launch of a multi-year funding commitment from the venerable nonprofit leader.

United Way Suncoast kicked off its new fiscal year on July 1 by initiating the distribution of a three-year grant that will deliver $270,000 to Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas.  HSCP will use the funds to support early childhood literacy through the Healthy Start program.  HSCP will provide the tools needed that will enable families to increase their child’s early literacy resulting in more Healthy Start infants and children will have enhanced child development and improved readiness for early learning. Healthy births contribute to the overall health of HSCP community. Healthy babies are more likely to grow into healthy children, especially if early detection in delays are identified before they start school.

Healthy Start Coalition will celebrate their 30th anniversary supporting healthy pregnancies, babies and families in Pinellas County to ensure they have the best start in life!  Since their inception in 1992, infant mortality in Florida declined 34%.  The Coalition will host their Annual Meeting to share their successes, thank community partners, honor a Healthy Start Hero, welcome a Family Spotlight on one of our clients, and hear from Keynote Speaker, Yamel Belen, RN, CLC, Doula/Owner One Love Doula Services, and President of the Tampa Bay Birth Network.

Congratulations to Michelle Schaefer for being awarded the Cooperman-Bogue Kids First Award presented by the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County. Michelle is a passionate champion of JWB’s Sleep Baby Safely campaign, she responds at all hours to deliver free pack-n-plays through the Healthy Start’s Coalition Beds 4 Babies Project, and leaves no stone unturned to ensure every baby has a healthy start! Join us in congratulating Michelle and share her video to inspire others.

The Healthy Start Program gives women the opportunity to participate in a free screening that helps identify risk factors that risk a healthy pregnancy or healthy baby. It provides a safety net for families that do not qualify for other programs. The organization also provides doula services and a coordinated intake and referral program that prioritizes Black pregnant women and families to receive access to their services.

At our 2021 Virtual Annual Business Meeting we had the pleasure of hearing from our Keynote Speaker, State Representative Kamia Brown, regarding House Bill 645, an extension of post-partum Medicaid. Our guest speaker, Eliza Lammers, did an amazing job sharing her research and award-winning C-Span Documentary of Decreasing Maternal Mortality in the USA.

We also had a chance to hear from her mother, Erin Lammers, who shared her personal postpartum story.

Spectrum Bay News 9- Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas COVID-19 Efforts

We are so thrilled to have been aired on Spectrum Bay News 9 yesterday evening!
Since the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas has been providing food and supplies to families served in the program.
Every Wednesday staff line their cars up in front of the Healthy Start office to pick up essentials like face masks, hand sanitizer, toiletries, school supplies, toys, diapers and wipes.Families are getting weekly “doorstep” deliveries by their Healthy Start home visitor. As shown in the clip a new mommy explains the difficulties of leaving her home in order to avoid exposure to Covid-19.
We have distributed more than 57,000 meals to an average of 120 families and children per week!
With donations from agencies like Feeding Tampa Bay, Beth Dillinger Foundation, The Kind Mouse Productions, Inc., Pasadena Community Church, Babycycle and Florida Dream Center we can continue to support Healthy Start families with basic living essentials.

In this new feature, we spotlight innovative and creative strategies for supporting the work of MORE hospitals in linking mothers with OUD to community resources. Local Healthy Start Coalitions are reaching out to MORE hospitals to assist with mapping services and facilitating post-discharge referrals to services as part of the initiative. Here’s a great example of this partnership!
