Congratulations to Michelle Schaefer for being awarded the Cooperman-Bogue Kids First Award presented by the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County. Michelle is a passionate champion of JWB’s Sleep Baby Safely campaign, she responds at all hours to deliver free pack-n-plays through the Healthy Start’s Coalition Beds 4 Babies Project, and leaves no stone unturned to ensure every baby has a healthy start! Join us in congratulating Michelle and share her video to inspire others.
The Healthy Start Program gives women the opportunity to participate in a free screening that helps identify risk factors that risk a healthy pregnancy or healthy baby. It provides a safety net for families that do not qualify for other programs. The organization also provides doula services and a coordinated intake and referral program that prioritizes Black pregnant women and families to receive access to their services.
2021 Virtual Annual Business Meeting
At our 2021 Virtual Annual Business Meeting we had the pleasure of hearing from our Keynote Speaker, State Representative Kamia Brown, regarding House Bill 645, an extension of post-partum Medicaid. Our guest speaker, Eliza Lammers, did an amazing job sharing her research and award-winning C-Span Documentary of Decreasing Maternal Mortality in the USA.
We also had a chance to hear from her mother, Erin Lammers, who shared her personal postpartum story.

Since the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas has been providing food and supplies to families served in the program.
Every Wednesday staff line their cars up in front of the Healthy Start office to pick up essentials like face masks, hand sanitizer, toiletries, school supplies, toys, diapers and wipes.Families are getting weekly “doorstep” deliveries by their Healthy Start home visitor. As shown in the clip a new mommy explains the difficulties of leaving her home in order to avoid exposure to Covid-19.
We have distributed more than 57,000 meals to an average of 120 families and children per week!
With donations from agencies like Feeding Tampa Bay, Beth Dillinger Foundation, The Kind Mouse Productions, Inc., Pasadena Community Church, Babycycle and Florida Dream Center we can continue to support Healthy Start families with basic living essentials.

Best Practices: Linking Hospitals to Community Resources
In this new feature, we spotlight innovative and creative strategies for supporting the work of MORE hospitals in linking mothers with OUD to community resources. Local Healthy Start Coalitions are reaching out to MORE hospitals to assist with mapping services and facilitating post-discharge referrals to services as part of the initiative. Here’s a great example of this partnership!
