We Adapt to the Community’s Needs
Healthy Start Coalition made a fundamental change that reduced the barrier to entry by ensuring individuals can access care and our team without a medical provider referral or due to high score on the Florida Prenatal/Infant Screen. This process has allowed us to more quickly identify an individual/family’s needs and make a referral to the program/services to meet their needs, therefore closing the gap in the time it takes to receive help.
We’ve prioritized securing funding for our wraparound services like Doula Care, Lactation Support, and Mental Health Counseling. These interventions and warm connections with needed resources improve health outcomes for pregnant people and babies in our community.

When we lost custody of our children due to our addiction, we thought our family was broken forever. But when we found out we were expecting again, the Parents As Teachers Plus program became our lifeline: giving us the tools, support, and hope we needed to stay clean, become the parents our new baby deserved, and fight to rebuild our family. As a first-time mom who only spoke Spanish, I was terrified I wouldn't be able to communicate during labor, but my Healthy Start Doula became my voice, my advocate, and my constant source of strength through 24 hours of labor. She helped me make informed decisions without judgment, taught me techniques that truly worked, and stayed by my side until my beautiful baby was safely in my arms and successfully breastfeeding. Thanks to her support, I didn't just survive my first birth: I felt empowered, confident, and ready to embrace motherhood with all the knowledge and community connections I needed.
